Can we talk about Polestar and how pricey the Polestar 2 is for a moment?

Not sure if many of you are aware, but you can configure this thing now and reserve it for pre-order. I got the email yesterday about reservations and about where & how to buy.

First off, to be “different”, Polestars’s dealers aren’t called dealers, they’re called Spaces, or Polestar Space. Super modern, they describe the interiors as progressive performance.

Kinja'd!!!

They are only going to be in a handful of cities, mostly in well to do areas of course: L.A. (specifically Van Nuys), San Francisco Bay Area (Palo Alto of course & Corte Madera) and New York all open this year. D.C., Boston, Texas, Denver and Florida the first half of ‘21. If you don’t live near one of the spaces and want to buy one, a “convenient solution” can be made. As for what that is they didn’t say, but I’m assuming it’s delivery.

Anyway, the Polestar 2 starts at $59,900. They say there may be additional incentives based on where you live, but I saw none. You can finance or lease for $649/month. Specs wise its chasing Tesla, like everyone else is. Dual motor, 408 horses, 487 lb/ft of torque, 78 kw batteries, claimed 275 mile range, 0-60 in less than 4.7 seconds. They are saying that this is the long range model. Dimensional wise its small, being nearly identical in length, height and width to the Model 3.

There are 6 exterior colors to choose from. 5 are $1,200. The only one that’s no charge is Black, which they call Void. As you can see all the other colors are differently named as well.

For the exterior to be damn near a copy and paste of a slightly smaller S60, its nice to see the interior is different enough. There are 3 colors to choose from: the standard Black which they describe as Charcoal Weave seats Black Ash Deco trim, Slate, which are Gray seats with the same Black Ash trim, and a $4k option of Barley colored ventilated Nappa leather seats with reconstructed wood deco trim. Wanting to see how pricey this thing gets I choose this option.

There are 3 option packages. At launch, the Polestar 2 is coming with 2 of them standard. One is called Pilot and its just your usual suite of driver safety aids like adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. The other is called Plus and is pretty much a tech/luxe package coming with things like a pano roof, LED fog lights, Harmon Kardon premium sound system, heated front and rear seats and more. The 3rd package is a $5k “Performance” package. And while I put performance in quotes because noting about it really screams performance (nor not really worth that 5 thousand dollar asking price), the package is actually called Performance. It includes:

Öhlins Dual Flow Valves dampers

Optimized brake system feat. Brembo brakes (front)

20" 4-Y Spoke Black Polished Forged Alloy Wheel

Gold Valve Caps

Gold Seat Belts front and rear

High gloss black roof segment

Why bother with Brembo’s if they are just going to be for the front? Anyway, I added this package. There are also 3 wheel options: one 19" and two 20" options. One came with the Performance package and the other is a $1,200 option that can be selected if you don’t get the Performance package.

Adding none of the 3 accessories (mats, a tow bar and a load carrier) the Polestar 2 rang in at an eye watering $70,200. Even with $8500 down and a 60 month loan term that’s still $1080/ month That price includes a $1300 delivery fee. Subtracting that fee and its still a high $68,900. They do point out that using the Federal Tax Credit takes the price down to a still high but more palatable $52,400. Its going to be interesting for sure to see if buyers bite. I see them being a boutique maker, and when I say boutique I mean selling less than 50 cars a month here. Its price, unfamiliarity and the fact that it looks like a Volvo will just keep buying buying Model 3's.

The Polestar 1 is so gorgeous, it’s  a shame the 2 doesn’t quite measure up.

It really is. For whatever reason that Volvo similarity works on the Polestar 1 and not so much on the 2,

90% leases is my conservative guess.

Isn’t this basically just an EV version of the next S40? Which I expect will be about half the price

Well i t actually has a full interior unlike the minimalist cost cutting interior of the Model 3.

Its also a hatchback, so it also somewhat competes w ith the more expensive Model Y.

I thought this as well. But it doesn’t seem like the S40 is coming back to the US. And if they did bring it back and make an EV model that undercuts this, that would be insane.
